ABOUT BRAT PROJECT

The project "BRAT – Balkan Route: Accoglienza in Transito" deals with the migration process in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). BRAT is a three-year initiative financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), and implemented by IPSIAcli (the main applicant) in partnership with Caritas Italiana and the Italian Red Cross and with the involvement of local partners: MFS Emmaus Association, Caritas BiH and the Red Cross Society of BiH.

The BRAT project aims to influence the political, cultural and operational levels, to contribute to the facilitation of the migration process in BiH, which is better managed, safer and more responsible (Goal 10.7 of the SDGs). In BiH, it is necessary to introduce new policies, stories and structures to make the management of migration flows more sustainable, efficient and in line with international standards.

MIGRATION AS A GLOBAL PHENOMENON

Migration phenomena, which affect all areas of the world in different ways, are difficult to summarize and generalize. To begin with, it should be remembered that there are different categories of people on the move, including refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, etc. It is important to keep in mind the difference between these different groups, as each of them is associated with certain rights and characteristics.

There are 103 million forcibly displaced persons in the world.

72% come from just five countries.

The Syrian Arab Republic with 6.8 million, Venezuela with 5.6 million, Ukraine with 5.4 million, Afghanistan with 2.8 million and finally South Sudan with 2.4 million.

In addition, it is interesting to note that the reception is also a global and not a purely European issue.

Leading countries in the number of refugees: Turkey (3.7 million), Colombia (2.5 million), Germany (2.2 million), Pakistan (1.5 million), and Uganda (1.5 million).

Finally, it is important to remember that it has been calculated that 69% of refugees and other persons in need of international protection are located in neighboring countries of their countries of origin, so that they do not move away or reach Europe.
